Lesson 6: Principles of PSR

Attention

Principles serve as a guiding force for the development of systems, methods, and the tools that we use in our work...consider them as the "Mission Statements" of our work!

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this lesson's material, students will be able to:

  • Review the basic principles of the practice of PSR
  • Analyze how a treatment plan can be applied in line with each of these principles

Teaching

In this section we are reviewing the Principles, which arise from the Values, of PSR. These are listed in detail HERE.

In summary they can be listed as follows:

  • Hope
  • Respect and Dignity
  • Real World
  • Multicultural
  • Self-determination
  • Individualized
  • Informal and Participatory
  • Preventive

These principles guide our practice when we develop plans to work with individuals to help them solve real world problems.

For this Lesson you are going to be presented a detailed case study. You are to work in groups to develop a realistic treatment plan for the individual that can truly be implemented if this were a real case.

You will then reflect on how the plan, the environment, and your behavior in implementing the plan will provide strengths and challenges associated with complying with the principles associated with PSR.

Treatment Planning

Treatment planning is a challenging task, but it can be broken down into fairly straight-forward steps.

  1. Assessment--This process involves the gathering of information related to the identified problem(s)
    • Housing
    • Social
    • Safety
    • Career
    • Financial
    • Relational
    • Health
    • Educational
    • Spiritual
  2. Goal Setting--This involves the establishment of workable goals that identify where the person "wants to be" in relation to this area of their life. Keep in mind that the goals need to be measurable so we can know when they are achieved
  3. Treatment--This process involves delineating a "to do list" as to activities that the client and case manager are going to engage in to bring about resolution of the goal.
    • Timeline and lists of what the Client is going to do
    • Timeline and lists of what the Case Manager is going to do
    • Referrals to other services and descriptions of the expectations that are to come about from these referrals
  4. Assessment--This process involves the manner in which the achievement of the goals will be assessed. How are you going to KNOW that the goal was achieved...? This should be intimately tied to the identified Goals in Step Two.

Evaluating the Principles

Now consider how your plan will remain in compliance with the principles of PSR...what are the strengths and challenges that are in your plan related to these principles?

Assessment

Lesson 6 Groups Discussion

In order to facilitate what would have happened in class for the Lesson 6 Assignment, I'm going to make small group discussion boards. Your task is to "meet" online with your small group and complete Lesson 6 Assignment together in this "virtual" way.

Click HERE to review the different Case Studies.

Your group's assigned case will be indicated in your Group Discussion Board. Your task is to collaboratively complete Lesson 6 Assignment and submit a single document representing your group work into the Discussion board itself (do not use the drop box this time).

I must see cooperative and substantive contribution by all of you with multiple posts in order to grade this discussion. IF you choose to meet in person to work on this, I must see documentation of this meeting (including individual contributions of the members) posted into this discussion boards as EVIDENCE of that meeting.

Lesson 6 Assignment

Each group will produce a document that meets the criteria outlined in the rubric below and will designate one individual to send the finished document to me via Blackboard email (as an attachment)

Each member of the group will receive the same grade.
