Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this lesson's material, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of a mental status examination and its purpose
  • Demonstrate the ability to make the requisite observations
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the terms associated with mental status examinations.

Teaching

Read Chapter 18

The mental status exam provides valuable information about a client. The exam is usually completed during the initial interview and a mini mental status exam may be completed during each visit.  It is key to get an idea of the types of behavior to be on the lookout for during the interview.  This will help you to know what to look for and what to note for others reference.  For example, looking for self neglect can give an indication if the client is depressed.

Assessment

Class Activity

In this chapter we cover observing the client.  To practice this skill, choose a person to observe.  Draw on the terminology from the chapter to describe the person and their behavior.  Figure 18.2 provides an outline of characteristics to note during a mental status examination.  Use this as a guideline for information to gather.  Gather as many characteristics as possible without making the person uncomfortable.  Share the characteristics here.  Also, describe the process of observation.  What difficulties, if any, did you encounter?
