Child Maltreatment 2012 - Data Tables

Child Abuse and Resilience

Child Abuse and Neglect are concepts that are difficult to talk about and understand.  Each day, thousands of children in the United States are abused or neglected in some way.  It is imperative that you understand your role in protecting children as mental health workers.  As a mandated reporter, you are required to notify Child Protective Services. They, in turn, follow a series of procedures designed to investigate the situation and take any necessary steps to protect the child in question.  This may include removing the child from the home.

Assessment

Lesson 3 Assignment

Define child abuse and give prevalence rates.  Do the same for neglect. Describe factors that contribute to child abuse and neglect (pp. 52-56) and explain why these factors may play a role. Specifically mention the need for cultural sensitivity and awareness, as you explain.

Possible Class Discussion A

Go to www.meganslaw.ca.gov Upon entering the site, and accepting the conditions/terms, do a search by city for Los Angeles.  First, view the map that shows the blue dots where the registered sex offenders live. Second, look at the list of offenders.  Choose one at random.  Read about the convictions and other information.  What were your reactions?  Please be specific.

Possible Class Discussion B

Write your thoughts/feelings about the Tedtalks posted to this lesson. Please be aware that this is a public forum, and some of the ideas were significantly graphic and traumatizing. Address any cultural beliefs that you believe you may struggle with? Please indicate whether words may matter- i.e. mutilation v. circumcision- empowerment v. abuse-- how might this matter?
