Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this lesson's material, students will be able to:

  • Students will create a professional resource listing community contacts, treatment centers, services and support groups, listing numbers and names of individuals to contact in various types of crisis.
  • Students will learn to write, read, and speak to professionals and as professionals, while using the technology available to synthesize need, organize information, identify resources, and make contacts to assist in supporting individuals in crisis.

Crisis Identification and Resolution

  • Understands family theory, developmental theory, human development across the life span, counseling theories, and crisis theory
  • Aware of prevalence and common effects of trauma
  • Aware of prevalence and common effects of co-occurring disorders (substance abuse and mental health)
  • Aware of screening and assessment strategies for co-occurring disorders (substance abuse and mental health)
  • Identifies consumer risk factors (i.e. suicide) and takes appropriate action
  • Understands role of medication in symptom management
  • Aware of the need to act as a contributing member of an interdisciplinary team
  • Knowledge of confidentiality
  • Aware of the need to evaluate effectiveness of personal practice
  • Understands effective use of supervision

Assessment

Lesson 1 Quiz

  1. Describe how family theory, developmental theory, human development across the life span, counseling theories, and crisis theory intersect.
  2. List some prevalence rates and statistics and some common effects of trauma, include possible interventions and/or resources available.
  3. Explain the differences in definitions re: abuse, addiction, dependence, use and drugs/alcohol, and cite prevalence rates. List common effects of co-occurring disorders (substance abuse and mental health) and provide ideas regarding reducing the prevalence of these effects.
  4. List screening and assessment strategies for co-occurring disorders (substance abuse and mental health).
  5. Identify consumer risk factors and protective factors.
  6. Provide some advantages and disadvantages of the role of medication in symptom management
  7. Define "interdisciplinary team," and support the need for working within this type of team.
  8. Explain your knowledge of confidentiality and ethical practice.
  9. List techniques to evaluate your effectiveness within your professional work. [remember ethical problem-solving model!]
  10. Give four reasons for supervision, and describe the difference between effective & ineffective supervision.

Possible Class Discussion

Look at your initial writing on your strengths and challenges as a crisis worker. Write a 300 word summary and post to Bb regarding your learning assessment and the three lessons you would want to pass on to other students who take this class.
