Teaching

All of us come from different backgrounds and experiences with writing. Some of you may remember the days when children were forced to write with their right hand when they wanted to use their left, or maybe there was an adult writer in the family that taught them how to write poetry. Think about how writing was a part of your life growing up and the emotions it may stir up.

Even if one is not a keen write, it is an essential part of the day. We write shopping lists, notes, papers for our class, etc. For children, writing is a skill that they have to learn and its impact on developmental growth is dramatic as you can see in the illustrations below. Assessment

This assignment has several parts:

  1. Write a reflection about your experiences growing up around writing. Provide details about what you remember. Did you struggle? Did you like it? Did you write poetry or journal? Was there a teacher or other role model that inspired you or discouraged you? How do you think your early experiences impacted what kind of writer you are today?
  2. What is the importance of written communication in early childhood? Read the article and review the stages of writing and holding a pencil. Discuss the role of confidence in writing and what steps do you take when a child is not on track in a stage or writing or holding a pencil?
  3. Provide three lesson plans for writing activities in the classroom. Each lesson plan must include the following:
  4. a. The setting of the environment
    b. Age of the child(ren)
    c. Title of the activity
    d. Summary
    e. Materials
    f. Modifications for children with special needs

  5. Implement one of the activities and provide the following:
  6. a. Number of children present
    b. Ages of the children present
    c. Level of engagement from the children
    d. Any modifications that you needed to make
    e. Assessment of the writing activity. Did it look like you expected? Is the child on track according to the resources provided in this lesson?
    f. What would you do differently next time?
