Teaching

The time is now.  In a technology driven world, it becomes more apparent that we must shift our way of learning, thinking and delivering messages.  Technology is integrated into everything and is not going away.  The advancements have been phenomenal and do not appear to be slowing down anytime soon.  In an attempt to keep up with the advancements, the Mental Health Program has initiated the m-Learning Initiative and deep integration of technology into our practice.

Part I of this process is the use of our Learning Management System, Blackboard (Bb). Blackboard is a Online tool that is used in all of our courses as a way of storing course information, communication, and, in many cases, the collection of assessment data (tests, quizzes, assignments, discussions, etc.).

This Lesson ZERO - Part I is an opportunity for you to get to know the Blackboard interface and how to use the tools you will need in that interface.

Let's first take a look at this video on how to navigate the Blackboard interface for your course.

You may also find more assistance on the KVCC web page KVCC Blackboard Learn assistance

Now that you have a general feel for the overall look and feel of the course in Bb, you will need to learn how to do a number of tasks in this software. They are:

  • Post and participate in an Online discussion board.
  • Take an Online quiz.
  • Upload an assignment to an assignment drop box.

Here is a video on how to participate in the Discussion Boards.

Assessment

Lesson ZERO - Part I Discussion

In this discussion we would like you to post a brief introduction to yourself. You are also expected to reply to at least two other students' posts commenting on their experiences and getting to know one another.

In addition, if you are NOT a matriculated Mental Health student and you are taking this class as an elective, please state this in your posting. We have a requirement for all of our student to have access to an Apple iPad (see Lesson ZERO - Part II and III) for some aspects of these classes and we want to help you meet this expectation.)

Lesson ZERO - Part I Quiz

This is a quiz based on information contained in the syllabus for your class. Be sure to have your syllabus ready when you take this quiz. This will be unique to each course in which you find this Lesson.

Lesson ZERO - Part I Assignment

For this assignment you are going to prepare a document in a word processors (For this assignment you are going to prepare a document using word processing software, Microsoft Word is the most popular one but you can do this with any word processor, including Pages on your iPad.)

HOWEVER...when you are sending a file to Blackboard it needs to be in one of TWO FORMATS

  • MS Word
  • PDF

You can use any word processor to compose your paper but you then need to convert it to MS Word or PDF (and PDF is preferable and will work better with Blackboard.)

Your assignment is to write a title page with the following information on it:

  • Your Name
  • Date
  • The name of this assignment - "Lesson ZERO - Part I Assignment"
  • The name of the school - "Kennebec Valley Community College"

On the next page in this document you will write a short essay about why you have decided to pursue a career in the Mental Health field.

If you are taking multiple Mental Health courses you can submit the SAME document to each class.
