Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this lesson's material, students will be able to:

  • Identify specific cultural norms associated with pregnancy and birth.
  • Describe cultural norms from one culture to members of another culture to foster intercultural knowledge.

Teaching

For this assignment you have been tasked with designing and information booklet for the Volunteer Office at the Central Iowa Birthing Center. The booklet is being produced to introduce Volunteers to the cultural differences between two groups of immigrants in the Central Iowa area who are beginning to frequent the Birthing Center.

These two groups are:

  • Indian
  • Samoan

Click HERE to download "Cultural Dimensions of Pregnancy, Birth, and Post-natal Care", this document provides some details on the issues related to these groups (and others).

This is a STARTING POINT, you may have to do additional web-based research to complete this assignment.

Construct the booklet (attractive cover, and content in a regular MS Word file) that outlines what you think these Volunteers should know about the parenting and birthing practices of these two minority groups.

Keep in mind that your audience is the Volunteers and you are trying to educate them on the differences in practices so that they will work optimally with these groups...so, you need to keep in mind...what would you want those Volunteers to know?
