This app, called Learning Child Abuse Prevention, contains information that could help families and young people learn the signs of abuse and how to prevent child abuse. It is set up like a game. I found that some of the writing did not include proper English but wanted each of you to give the game a try and see what you thought. How might you use a game like this with children and families as a mental health worker?

m-Learning Bootcamp Part II - Setting Up your iPad

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this lesson's material students will be able to:

  • Set up and use their Apple iPad

Teaching

A fundamental part of the m-Learning Initiative in the Mental Health program is the use of the Apple iPad. This mobile device is a PART of the overall plan of integrating the use of technology in this program. It is not designed to be the ONLY technology you use in the program. The goal is for you to be sufficiently comfortable with both regular computer and mobile technology platforms as you will encounter both of these in the field.

This Lesson focuses on how to set up your new iPad and how to access a number of required online services and apps that are used in many of the courses in the Mental Health program.

Here are the tasks you need to complete in this Lesson:

  • Setting up your new iPad and your Apple ID
  • Setting up your App Store Account

Note: Setting up your Apple ID is easier to do on a regular computer than it is to do on your iPad, so for this part you will need to use a regular computer. Be sure to write down all your access information (access email / user name / password) and keep this is a secure location so you can remember how to access your account again in the future.

Setting up your App Store Account

One of the great advantages of the iPad (and all things Apple in this case) is the App store. Gone are the days of going to a physical store to purchase the programs (applications, hence "apps") for your devices. Access to the App Store is built right into the device. This is similar to Google Play on Android.

In each of your future Mental Health courses you will be directed to use your iPad with sections of your lessons designated with an iPad Integration logo and box, like this one below.

Within the box you will find instructions that will direct you to the steps your Instructor wants you to take using a specific app on your iPad. The app image and name will be provided for you in the box as well. I provided a picture of the Apple Support app below to give you an idea what this process will look like. If you have any issues finding the apps indicated please follow up with your Instructor.

We do our best select apps we believe will be interesting and helpful to our students and their learning. There are times when an app is tested before the semester begins and then an update occurs and the app no longer functions as expected. We try to be proactive about these issues but sometimes this can occur. Please, just let your Instructor know when you encounter an issue with an app.

Having all the Mental Health Program Students be using the same device has been an amazing experience for me as an Instructor here at KVCC. I hope each of you will also find some benefits to our m-Learning Initiative as well. Sometimes learning about new technology can be frustrating but our philosophy is that we want to use technology to enhance learning not get in the way of learning. Your Faculty Advisor is just an email away if you need assistance in setting up your iPad, your Apple ID or problem solving an issue with your device.
