Academics (Teaching Excellence): The Syllabus

The Syllabus

The Syllabus is by far one of the most important documents that you will provide for your students.

The Syllabus outlines specific aspects of the class including:

  • Course title and number
  • Meeting times and days
  • Instructor contact information
  • Course Description
  • Course Objectives
  • Outlines of content
  • Expectations of assignments and class activities
  • Grading policies
  • Behavioral policies
  • Information on ADA and Disability accommodations

As is discussed in the Classroom Management section, the Syllabus serves as the best source of class policy and provides information on what behaviors are expected in the classrom and which behaviors will not be tolerated.

Standard Syllabi

KVCC standardizes their course syllabi and particular sections are not subject to individual Faculty editing and must be cleared through the Curriculum Committee to be changed. These aspects of the Syllabus include:

  • Course number and title
  • Course description
  • Course objectives
  • ADA and Disability information

The remainder of the Syllabus is subject to individual Faculty editing. However, all Syllabi must contain the following components:

  • A detailed explanation of grading
  • A topical outline of the course
  • Descriptions of major assignments and projects
  • Attendance policies
  • Incomplete policies

See your Department Chair for more information on standard components of the Syllabus.
